Located off Vancouver’s Cambie Corridor, this urban home sits within a typical residential zone with relatively prescriptive zoning and limited opportunities for formal articulation. The design strategy explores how a varied spatial organization can then generate richness within a compact footprint and form.

Rather than adopting a conventional open-plan arrangement, the main floor is organized as a series of semi compartmentalized rooms using specific calibrations to produce moments of separation alongside implied connections. Diagonal views link spaces across the plan instead. Walls and millwork are frequently positioned so that space extends around and behind. Oblique sightlines and shifting light conditions soften the perception of the house’s limits as sunlight enters indirectly from adjacent rooms.

Movement through the house unfolds gradually, with spaces spilling into one another, rather than revealing themselves all at once. A central architectural concrete wall and custom staircase adjacent interconnects the flow vertically and are modulated to create varied experiences. Carved out lightwells enhance subgrade rooms with light and specialty viewing gardens. Intentionally circuitous paths to and from the house also shift diagonally across the site to extend the appreciation of the garden and the architecture. Intentional sequencing reinforces a sense of discovery.

The internal organization is expressed on the façades with distinct volumes that are composed with restraint. An elongated yet irregular light coloured brick is in direct contrast to darker metal details. Compositions and massing are precisely outlined with a series of crisp edges and junctions, underscoring the disciplined assembly of the building inside and out. A complementary attitude to the exterior and interior is present also in the millwork design using informal horizontal random flitch elements across varied panel widths alongside rigorous details and fixtures in metal as counterpoint.

Together, these strategies establish a cohesive architectural attitude demonstrating how spatial diversity and richness can emerge within clearly defined limits and across design disciplines.
