McLeod Building MB01

An extensive renovation of a 560 square foot apartment in the historic McLeod Building in downtown Edmonton, this space functions either as an office or as a living space. Existing terrazzo floors were rejuvenated, but only to the extent that traces of past lives and uses remain obvious. Heritage-protected moldings and window systems were repaired and painted so as to recede, allowing new elements to stand out: pecan wood veneer for cabinetry and curved-and tapered-walls, Calacatta Paonazzo marble at the kitchen, wool and mohair velvet at the built-in sofa. Ship-like detailing integrates required systems—such as heating and ventilation, storage, appliances, and sleeping—in visually quiet and spatially efficient ways.
